Tollway failures are harder than highway failures

The Sam Rayburn Tollway produces fewer calls than I-35E but more difficult ones, and the reason is speed. A tire that lets go at seventy miles an hour does not deflate, it disintegrates, and the driver keeps going to find an exit because stopping in place is not an option. By the time the car is stationary the sidewall is destroyed and often the wheel rim with it.

That is why so many SH-121 calls that start as a tire change end as a flatbed tow to a tire shop. There is nothing left to fit a spare to.

The tollway shoulder is at least generous, which helps. If you can reach it, get all the way right past the rumble strip and exit through the passenger side, away from live lanes.

The interstate side

I-35E through here sits on the state list of most congested roadways and is being rebuilt under live traffic as part of the 35Express project. Lane closures run overnight between Business 121 and FM 407, and the shoulder you would normally aim for is often gone behind concrete barrier.

A breakdown in that stretch after dark is a genuinely awkward job. Say which direction you were traveling when you call, because the frontage road system and the barrier mean a truck cannot simply cross to the other side. Northbound and southbound are separate trips.

The retail district and its parking decks

The shopping area around Vista Ridge Mall produces the everyday calls. Summer heat plus an hour parked in an open lot is the standard recipe for a battery that will not turn the engine over, and this is the single most common jump start location in the city.

Parking structures add their own wrinkle. A flatbed needs roughly forty feet of clear run behind the vehicle to tilt its deck, and low clearance on a deck level rules the truck out entirely. Cars in a structure often have to be moved out to open ground before they can be loaded, so mention the level and the clearance when you call.
